Windows Home Server vs. Windows Server 2008? - home server raid

I want to create a local server that both backup (RAID) to serve for my family through three states and file sharing or media. I have never tried with the server O / S before, and would appreciate all opinions. I have experience with construction equipment and generally consider myself high-tech knowledge, but do not want to spend too much time trying to learn things. Windows Home Server seems to be much less complicated than Server 2008. Recommendations, please? Thank you.
